According to Saeed Hasan, Osman Hadi passed away at 9:45pm Bangladesh time. Dr Ahad, head of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) health cell and Hadi’s treating physician, also confirmed the death in a video message, stating that the hospital in Singapore had formally notified them.
Earlier on Wednesday night, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan visited Hadi at the hospital. Following the visit, he spoke with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus around 9:40pm and informed him that Hadi’s condition was extremely critical.
Osman Hadi, who was being considered as a potential candidate for Dhaka-8 in the upcoming national election, was shot in the head on Friday, December 12, in the Purana Paltan area of the capital. Investigators said an assailant opened fire from a motorcycle that had been following him while he was travelling in a battery-powered rickshaw to conduct electioneering.
He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors performed emergency brain surgery due to severe head injuries. Physicians described his condition as extremely critical, noting that the bullet entered above his left ear and exited through the right side of his head, causing extensive damage to the brain stem.
He was later transferred to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment and was airlifted to Singapore on December 15.
Meanwhile, the BNP, the National Citizen Party (NCP), and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expressed deep condolences over Osman Hadi’s death. In a condolence message signed by joint member secretary and media cell secretary Mushfiq us Saleheen, the NCP said party leaders and activists were deeply saddened and prayed for forgiveness for Hadi’s departed soul while extending sympathy to his grieving family.
