DU students, supporters demand justice for Osman Hadi’s killing at Shahbagh.
The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu), along with several Dhaka University–based student organisations and supporters of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, staged a sit-in at Shahbagh on Thursday night, demanding justice for those responsible for his killing.
The protest began shortly after news of Hadi’s death spread. Ducsu, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti—the student wing of the National Citizen Party (NCP)—and the Anti-Dominance Students’ Collective later joined the demonstration.
According to eyewitnesses, protesters gathered in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture, chanting slogans calling for the swift punishment of Hadi’s killers. Barricades were placed on both sides of the road to ensure security, while traffic on nearby roads around Shahbagh remained largely unaffected. Police were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Doctors at Singapore General Hospital declared Osman Hadi dead at 9:45pm Bangladesh time on Thursday, Saeed Hasan, convener of Inqilab Mancha’s Dhaka University unit, confirmed.
Osman Hadi was shot on December 12 in the Box Culvert Road area of Purana Paltan, leaving him critically injured. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery, before being transferred to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment.
He was later airlifted to Singapore on Monday afternoon under government supervision for further medical care.
